Post by Thomas Lun » Sat, 03 Feb 1996 04:00:00

Hi all

I do not know how to get X running in 16 bpp AND load xinitrc. Where can
i specify -bpp 16? There is no reference to it AT ALL on my machine, so
please don't reply "RTFM"

Thanx
Thomas

ok, let's try the "extended" version:

        man XF86_S3           or XF86_Accel
        man XFree86
        man startx
        startx -- -bpp 16
        startx -- -bpp 24

Try Subsection "Display" of the XF86Config file in /etc/X11. This is
where you should have the modes specified.

        startx -- -bpp 16

is fine for startx, but to get 16 bit colors in xdm you need:

        :0 local /etc/X11/X -bpp 16

In you /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers file.

I have Linux (slackware 3.0) runing in runlevel 4.  So it uses xdm, to
log in.   So for me to get 16 bit color Ihave to add this line

:0 local /etc/X11/X -bpp 16

is that right????

Now the question is where??????????

When I do this XV seems to give 16 bits colors, but the window-manager
(olvwm, I love this one) gives me a gray background (not the standard
blue) and no lines in the virtual desktop... What can I do about that?

Don't say RTFM, cause it isn't there...

Please react on Email and follow-up,

Do you use "xsetroot -solid Blue &" in your .xinitrc ?
What do you mean 'no lines in virtual desktop' ?
This will have something to do with your olvwm-Settings :
Perhaps VirtualGrid might be the solution here , but I didn't understand
the problem !
