savage twister on asus b1 laptop.....and fonts

Post by Josh » Wed, 29 May 2002 13:28:46

hey all, i recently purchased an asus b1 laptop, i installed slackware
on which configure my graphics device to be the frame buffer, which is
fine except for the lack of xvideo support, a must have for watching
dvd's. i recentlu upgraded to version 4.2.0,and changed the driver
from fbdev to svage, but for some reason the mouse pointer apperas
off, it appears higher on the screen relative to its actual position.
and when i mnage to bring up vlc or mplayer, switching to full screen
with xv output, it is not fully full screen, the part that is not
being used by the video is blue. also, how d i get x to see my windows
fonts, at the moment my fonts under fluxbox and kde are disgusting, i
copied windows ttf fonts to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF, but
mkfontdir does not add them. below is my XF86Config-4 file, any help
would be much appreciated.

Are you using the Savage driver built-in to 4.2.0?  Are you using a
graphics mode that is smaller than your LCD panel?  The stock driver is
missing compensation for some of the graphics stretching modes.  Try
downloading the latest driver from my web site,
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html.

Alternatively, you should be able to work around this by adding:

   Option "SWCursor"

to the "Device" section of you XF86Config file.

Quote:>and when i mnage to bring up vlc or mplayer, switching to full screen

>being used by the video is blue.

This should also be fixed in the 1.1.23t driver on my web site.

There are some web sites that offer help on working with Windows fonts in
X.  You have to do a bit more than just mkfontdir.

1. X setup on a savage twister chipset (Shuttle FV25 box)

I own one of this wonderful Shuttle's barebone (FV 25) and I want to build a
DivX/MP3 linux box with it. I aiming at a fast-booting clean setup with
minimal components. BTW, if anyone finds the idea interesting or has some
experience in this area, give me feedback.

The sound setup works great (with a little bit of tweaking I admit, I must
use ALSA) on a MDK 8.2 but I still have problem with the display system ( a
VIA twister-T chispet (PN133T) featuring a S3 Savage4 chipset). I use
Mplayer ,as it is, in my opinion, the most capable linux movie player ,so I
have a wide choice of video output. Xv output on X should be the fastest but
it isn't (in fact VESA output is the fastest which is strange). It seems
that X Savage out-of-the-box support on a MDK 8.2 is not working properly. I
tested my X setup with and without "NoAccel" and there is no difference .
Yet, I absolutly need hardware acceleration (especially hardware scaling) in
order to fit ANY DivX movie into a TV display. (soft scaling is SO slow)

I downloaded a savage_drv.o (1.1.23t from
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html) replaced the included driver with
this one and it still doesn't work. (of course I checked XF86Config ...)
I get during X boot many such messages "could not activate Write-Combining
at <an address>" (aka MTRR), I definitely want to set this up working as it
is said in Mplayer's docs that it can increase player performance by 3x. And
obviously, Hardware scaling would be good !

Please help me out !
