Motif & XFree86 3.1

Post by Grant R. Guenth » Sat, 21 Jan 1995 09:14:34

We are using Metrolink's Motif 1.2.4 for some development work on Linux.
We recently upgraded to X11R6 (XFree86 3.1) and are having problems.

(i) Is there anyone who feels expert enough about this combination to
    discuss the problems ?

(ii)  Does anyone know of a Motif that explicitly works with 3.1 ???

Thanks for your help

I presume your problems are seg-faults, especially under cut&paste operations.

Since I used to have this problem, when slackware with XFree-3.1 first
came out, which forced me to downgrade to XFree-2.1, and have now
successfully re-upgraded to the newest version of slackware, with all my
Motif programs working perfectly (including Maple), I guess I qualify.

The thing you need to do is provide the nls configuration files.  Some
say all you need is to set the path to them, but it worked for me
to simply put XFree-2.1's nls subdirectory in /usr/lib/X11/nls (which
is a link to /var/X11R6/lib/nls).  I will tar up the contents of that
directory and upload it to sunsite's Incoming directory for those who
don't have access to XFree-2.1 files.

You also have to have the old X11 and Xt libraries.  I have not tried
linking with the new libraries yet, it may or may not work, and any
stuff I have uploaded with static Motif must still be linked against
the old lib's.

Others have told me that the `compatibility lib's' will also help.  I don't
know about that.

I believe there is no such thing, yet, since even Motif 2.0 is an R5
product.  The MetroLink contact (Holly Robinson) told me that we should
not expect a real R6 Motif until 2.1, which is several months out.

Well, I'll certainly not call myself an expert, but I have indeed seen
this problem.  I too tried to upgrade to R6 and found problems.  The Motif
libs were looking for the older X11 libraries, and flat out would not work with
the new ones.

Also, when I tried to recompile the few Motif apps that I have, none
would link.  It was the problem with the new libraries again.

I gave up and went back to XF86 2.1.1 and have been happy since.

: (ii)  Does anyone know of a Motif that explicitly works with 3.1 ???

I bet when a version of Motif 2.0 is available (perhaps it is already)
it'll work with 3.1.  In fact it'll probably require X11R6, but, this is a
guess.

        Good luck.

: This certainly comes up a lot in this newsgroup.  Anyway, Motif 2.0
: is definitely an X11R5 product, NOT X11R6.

This is not true, I have ported and am distributing Motif 2.0 with both
a XFree86-2.x [X11R5] port and a XFree86-3.1 [X11R6] port

: I am still using Motif 1.2.4 from Metrolink, and I do have to link
: my Motif applications using the old libraries, but they can co-exist
: with an X11R6 installation, as long as you keep the X11R5 libraries
: around somewhere.  You don't have to keep using Xfree86 2.1.1 for
: all of your work if you don't want to.

You mighjt want to consider my old posting

                OSF/Motif 2.0 (R) for Linux
                ---------------------------

I am pleased to announce the availability of  OSF/Motif  2.0
for Linux; the port was done using OSF/Motif 2.0 source code
tree and validated with OSF/Validation Test Suite (R).

The package is a complete runtime and  development  environ-
ment  providing all the necessary files to develop OSF/Motif
applications.

1.  CONTENTS

The distribution includes:

o   mwm window manager and binaries for both X11R5 and X11R6
    shared libraries.

o   Shared and static libraries for  X11R5  (XFree-2.1)  and
    X11R6 (XFree-3.1)

o   UIL support

o   Header and Include Files

o   Source code and precompiled copies of all OSF/Motif demo
    programs and libraries.

PostScript documentation is available only  on  request  and
with a small extra charge because of it's size.

2.  WHAT'S NEW

OSF/Motif 2.0 is a great enhancement  of  previous  releases
and   includes   many   new   widgets   such   as  ComboBox,
Container/IconGadget, CSText, Notebook, SpinBox.   Many  new
features  and  demos  have been added but the most important
aspects  are  extensibility,  performance  improvements  and
quality  (no  more  memory  leaks).  Email me for a complete
list of all new features in OSF/Motif-2.0

3.  REQUIREMENTS

Linux version 1.1.52 or higher, libc  4.6.20,  libm  4.6.20,
ld.so  1.5.1,  XFree86  2.1 and/or XFree-3.1, 8M RAM or more
and 10M swap.  The current distribution  uses  a.out  format
and support for ELF is on the way.

4.  SUPPORT

Free technical support  is  available  via  email,  fax  and
phone, so do not hesitate to contact me.

5.  UPGRADES

Upgrade to minor releases of OSF/Motif 2.x and  all  patches
will  be  available  FREE  by email or ftp to all registered
users.  Cross-platform upgrades are also available  enabling
users  of  other  vendors  to  upgrade to OSF/Motif 2.0. All
registered users will receive at no cost ELF versions of the
distributions as soon as they will be ready.

6.  SHIPPING

Preferred shipping method is via ftp upload to your  machine
and  this  will  be done at no cost. All ftp uploads will be
performed within 12 hours from the arrival of the  order.  I
will accept to upload the full distribution by anonymous ftp
ONLY if there is a publicly writable but non readable direc-
tory to put the software in.

If you prefer a 3.5" floppy disk distribution  you  will  be
charged about $15 for media and insured air mail.

7.  COST

The cost of the full OSF/Motif 2.0 distribution is $149 plus
about $15 shipping if delivery is not via ftp. In Europe add
VAT to these prices and send  your VAT number of identifica-
tion.

As noted before, all PostScript documentation  is  available
only  on  request  and for an additional $25 because of it's
size (about 12M of gziped files)

8.  ORDERING

To place an order send your VISA or Master card  number  and
expiration date by email to one of these addresses

1. Motif 2.0 on Linux (XFree86 3.1)

Are there any patches or instructions on compiling Motif 2.0 on Linux ? We
(the University) have source license for the Motif 2.0, so I thought to
install it on a Linux PC, which has XFree86 3.1 (binaries only, should I get
sources?). Since the sources do not mention the Linux, I am little
worried. XFree86 is based on X11R6, but Motif 2.0 is based on X11R5. Would it
be easier to use R5 than R6?
