How hard is upgrading to X11R6?

Post by M. Shawn East » Sat, 31 Dec 1994 09:44:21

Hi all,

I'm thinking about upgrading my linux 1.1.74 XF86 2.1 system
   with XF86 3.1.

Before I begin this trial, can anyone tell me if I will need to
have versions of my X apps which were compiled with X11R6 or
will the apps compiled with X11R5 still work?

   THanks, Shawn.

The old apps will work fine if you keep the old libraries.

You will still need your Xfree86 2.1 shared libraries.  The
safest way to upgrade is to grab the Slackware 2.10 X-disk
set (13 disks, collect them all!) from ftp.cdrom.com.  This includes
the X11R5 and X11R6 shared libraries, along with other
enhancements.  X11R5 apps run just fine on the new server.

Not completely true.  Motif-based app's can't cut&paste correctly, and some die
completely.
