XFree 3.1.2 And Trident 8900D?

Hi,
I am trying to get Xfree86 to run on a  486 PC with a 1MB Trident 8900D card.
I used xf86config to probe the card. When using startx, the card swicthes
resolutions and random dots appear. Then the Root window bitmap comes up
and the machine locks up shortly after. Sometimes the mouse pointer appears
for a little while, but not always. Does anyone know the reason for this problem?
