How to setup default color depth in X?

Post by Ditt Nav » Fri, 04 Oct 1996 04:00:00

I'm running X11R6 in redhat linux and cant figure out how to setup the
default color depth in X. I have a 2MB #9 FX motion771 (S3-968) graphics
card and X runs fine in 1024x768 8bit mode. In XF86Config the res. mode
have been set up for 8, 16 and 24 bit mode, but where does it say what
mode to use?
Please repond via email if possible to:

thanks in advance...

Under "section screen", enter
 DefaultColorDepth 16

note that this is a new feature under 3.1.2G
For startx, you can use

        startx -bpp 16

(or you can add it to the /usr/X11R6/bin/startx script:
  change the line
    serverargs=""
  to
    serverargs="-bpp 16"
)

I don't know about 3.1.2G, but under 3.1.2F you needed:

        startx -- -bpp 16

The first '--' told startx to pass the argument on to the X part.

1. Default Color Depth

How can I change the default color depth to 16bpp?  I need to have
XFree86 start in at least that when I start it, and was wanting to
start  it on bootup.  So, I guess what I want is, how can I get it to
start in 16bpp from bootup?
