There seem to be an aweful lot of Xwindows managers out there.  Could
someone summarize the pros and cons of KDE, MetroX, CDE, Openlook,
.....[feel free to insert some of your own here]....Xfree86/X11

For the most part the only difference is the look of the window manager
but there is also the fact that some have more features then others.
Most windows managers have be developed from FVWM.  The 2.0 version has
the most features of any Window manager I have seen but is the hardest
to setup and has the worst look and feel.  FVWM95 has the same features
as FVWM but with a M$ Win95 look.  Great for fromer PC user that can not
let go.  AfterStep has the best look and feel.  It tries to copy the
look and feel of the NeXTSTEP OS but adds a alot of feature of its own.
I give AfterStep my vote.  My page has a list of a good number of Window
Managers.

MetroX and Xfree86/X11 are not window managers.  I would not even thing
of running Openlook.

Firstly, MetroX and XFree86 like John said are not window
managers.  They are X servers.

Window managers such as FVWM and AfterStep are special X
clients whose primary resposibility is to control window operations and
behavior (such as iconifying or tiling windows).

KDE and CDE are what are known in the X world as Desktop
Managers.  They give you a complete, graphical environment much like
WorkPlace Shell for IBM's Presentation Manager (the windowing system
used on OS/2) does.

OpenLook is a GUI implemetation for X.  A GUI defines the
"look-and-feel" of a program.  Other GUIs for X are Motif and Athena.
CDE uses the Motif GUI.  KDE uses the GUI implemented by the Qt
Toolkit, which is very similar to the Motif look-and-feel.

1. Linux vs OS2 vs NT vs Win95 vs Multics vs PDP11 vs BSD geeks

Every machine and operating system has got its useful
purpose...

I see no point in argueing with people which OS is better, and
which is worse, and what will survive and what wont...

The bottom line is obviously the best OS is the one that make
the end user most productive.    Ive used quite a variety of software
from intel, ibm, MS, sun, GNU, DEC/compaq, etc,   and everything OS
has got its UPz and DOWnz, so depending on what you want to do with it
yer machine, probably determines what OS you run.

So lets cut to the chase -  OS bashing is a waste of time,
and most of the time I'd say the person putting it down just hasn't
seen that particular OS's potential,  or should I say speciality....

Hell,  Plan 9 has even got some interesting features.. <snicker>

And all PC users know,  that no matter what use on a day to day
basis on the PC, that one day you will need to boot good ole ancient
DOS to do something...
