Problem upgrading KDE v2.1.1 to v2.2

Hi. I am having problems to upgrade my KDE fully from v2.1.1 to v2.2 with
RPM files in Red Hat Linux v7.1 (with Kernel v2.4.9). I was able to upgrade
a bunch of dependcies and KDE files from noarch/ nonkde/ and kde/. I got
these RPM files from ftp.kde.org (/i386 and RedHat directories). Here's what
left that I am stuck with:

I tried different methods to install them (i.e. --nodeps to force and
ignore the dependencies problems, try to upgrade invidiual library
and components invidviduall, etc.). Nothing seems to work.

Do you have any ideas what I am doing wrong? I am still considered a
Linux newbie. I wished KDE had an auto-updater like Ximian's Red-Carpet
program to avoid the manual upgrade.

I look forward to receiving a reply soon. Thanks! :)

Problem upgrading KDE v2.1.1 to v2.2

Post by Ian Ishma » Wed, 05 Sep 2001 08:48:50

I ran into the same problem.  I ended up installing the non-kde stuff
one-by-one. If I got a complaint about the package that I'm installing is
required, I used the --nodeps. It worked for me.

Watch out for libssl and libcrypto. They've been moved in the new package.
So, you'll have to go into /usr/lib and fix the soft links for those two
packages. They should be like this:

# ls -l /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.1 /usr/lib/libssl.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           23 Sep  3 00:17
/usr/lib/libcrypto.so.1 -> ../../lib/libcrypt.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           26 Sep  3 00:18 /usr/lib/libssl.so.1
-> ../../lib/libssl.so.0.9.6b

BTW, get ready for major resource hogging. KDE 2.2 uses a ton more resources
than KDE 2.1. Of course, if you have a >1GHz CPU and a 512Meg RAM, you
probably won't notice much of a difference. :-)

Hope it helps.

Great. Too late. I am a GNOME user, but I am just checking out the new KDE. :)
I am using a P2 300 with 128 MB. KDE can't be slower than GNOME!

Problem upgrading KDE v2.1.1 to v2.2

It is ! I just upgraded to RedHat 7.1 and I've tried both GNOME (1.2 ?)
and KDE 2.2. GNOME is much faster. I agree that the previous version of
GNOME was slower than KDE 1.x.

BTW, I have a k6II-350Mhz with 64MB RAM. I'm getting another 128MB this
week (they're practically giving the stuff away.)

Good luck !

Problem upgrading KDE v2.1.1 to v2.2

Post by ANT.. » Wed, 05 Sep 2001 18:56:04

Ian, the new version isn't too bad. I still can't upgrade about five non-KDE RPM
files. You can check in the another thread title, "Can't upgrade these remaining
non-kde RPM files..." in this newsgroup. :(

1. SCO Foxbase+ v2.1.1 To v2.1.2

I have a older SCO system with Foxbase+ v2.1.1 that I am trying to
upgrade tp Y2K.  SCO's sls patch "app336c" is fopr version v2.1.2 and
does not install over v2.1.1.

Can anyone tell me if v2.1.1 can be upgraded to v2.1.2?  If so where do
I obtain the patches?

Can v2.1.2 still be purchased?  Where?

Thanks for your help
