Stealth64 Graphics 2001 DRAM (ARK chip) help needed!

Post by Frank Smi » Mon, 03 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Help! I'm trying to get a Diamond Stealth64 Graphics 2001 DRAM PCI
(with the ARK clock chip) to work under X. Even with XFree312d the
best I can do is standard VGA (640x480) and that is with the SVGA
server. Superprobe identifies it as a "standard VGA or unknown SVGA
card" with no clocks. The XFree FAQ and Diamond's web page imply that
there is at least minimal support for it, but I can't find any
configuration lines and clock rates that it likes. Most things I've
tried do a solid lockup of the server (CTL-ALT-bkspc doesn't even
stop the server, I'm forced to reboot).
If anyone has gotten this card to do anything better than 640x480
I'ld love to hear how. I know other varieties of the Stealth64 work
great with X, is this particular model the totally unsupported board
I suspect it is?

TIA,
frank

Stealth64 Graphics 2001 DRAM (ARK chip) help needed!

Post by Jesse Hughe » Sat, 08 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hey ho.

I'm having serious problems setting up X for my  Stealth64 Graphics
2001 DRAM card.  I have looked at the various FAQs and set the chip to
ARK2000pv and the ClockChip to ics5324.  My monitor is set to generic
settings for 640x480 and I set the horizontal and vertical sync
according to the information I found in the monitor's technical data.

When I try to run X, my screen goes black and then shrinks and expands
repeatedly.  After a few of these pulses, it stops (blackened).

I thought that the problem might be my monitor, but when I tried a
newer monitor on my computer, the result was similar (although the
pulses were less extreme).

I'm a novice at this sort of thing, so I don't really know whether
this is a problem with monitor settings or card settings.  I also notice
that when I boot Linux, I see a message that there is an unknown PCI
device present.  My graphics card is the only PCI device I have, so
perhaps this message is relevant.

Even when I run X using -probeonly, I get the exact same result
(pulses, followed by blank screen).  When I save the results of this, I
don't find any information that seems useful.  The messages appear
normal, no warnings or errors.

Even SuperProbe seems to fail on my machine.  It turns the screen into
a garbled mess, so that I can't read the results.  (I've tried sending
the results to a file, but for some reason, that didn't work).

Any help for this sad and frazzled novice would be greatly
appreciated.  If you could even tell me whether I should be playing with
the monitor or the card configurations (given the errors I've
described), that would be swell.

Thanks,
Jesse

What version of X are you using?  I've gotten it to work in 3.1.2B(I
think I had to play with some settings), and I know that D and E work for
me with no extra configuring besides using xf86config.

1. 1280x1024 on Stealth64 Graphics 2001 (ARK LOGIC) + DELL ULTRASCAN 21TE

Hello to everybody,

I was wondering if there is anybody out there who runs a resolution of
1280x1024 or close on a Diamond Stealth 64 Graphics 2001 card (ARK Logic
with 2MB RAM). So far I have been running 1024x768 at a 16 bit level on
a 14" monitor. But since yesterday I have a 21" monitor (max 1600x1200)
and therefore I'd like to get a higher resolution. I tested the monitor
on MS WIN 3.1 (sorry for this) and I can get the full resolution there
(1600x1200 with 256 colors). On Linux however running XFree86 3.2 the
maximum I can get is 1024x768 at a non-interlaced level. The monitor I
have is a DELL Ultrascan 21TE (OEM Mitsubishi) which should be able to
handle everything at this level.

Any help is appreciated.
TIA

Rainer
