XFree86 4.02 + Nvidia 0.9-769 = CRASH

Post by Frodo Lari » Thu, 12 Apr 2001 05:10:09

Hi peeps,

I'm having some major problems with X and Nvidia;

when I select something with my mouse and/or move my mouse: X Crashes
when I scroll up/down with cursor keys: X Crashes

These crashed don't happen always, somethimes it's after a couple of
hours, but other times it is within a minute or so. I've read
groups.google.com that there are a (lot?) couple of people having the
same problem but I didn't see anyone had an solution for this.

The crash is really heavy; I can't get into my box anymore; nothing
works (even remote access via ssh or so).

X always worked for me with Nvidia until I upgraded to Nvidia's newest
driver, I also upgraded my debian packages to a newer X 4.02 version. My
last stable experience was with early 4.02 versions and Nvidia 0.96.
Yesterday I upgraded to 4.03-0pre1v1 from Debian, but the problem still
exists.
Is here anyone here who has an solution or has the same problem?

I tried an kernel with or without AGP support, X with or Without AGP
support; same problem. I even tried switching back to 0.96 but the
problem remains.

My current setup is:
Debian 2.2 woody
XFree86 4.03-0pre1v1
libc6 2.2.2-4
kernel 2.4.2 (with MTRR support, no fb, no agp)

My Hardware is:
Creative Blaster; NVidia TNT 16 MB (AGP)
VIA VT82C586 chipset
[below could be useful]
Flyvideo 98 (TV Card, which uses BT878 chipset)
Adaptec 2940UW
Creative PCI128

I really hope someone can help me with this.

Sincerly,

Frodo Larik

PS: Same setup runs on a computer with an ATI RagePro IIc here are *no*
problems.

I am one of those people ... your description (crash often when
scrolling; sometimes after hours, sometimes after minutes only) does
exactly fit my problem, too :-(

Magic-SysRq works for me (well, the b (boot) option at least - the s/u
(sync/umount) options only rarely, so mostly I have to wait for fsck
:-((!)

I had the problem aver since I did a major system upgrade (Kernel 2.2.x
-> 2.4.0, XFree 3.3.x -> 4.0.2, KDE 1.0 -> KDE 2.0.1). I had used the
nv drivers first, upgraded to nvidia 0.9-6, then to 0.9-769 - all to no
avail.

Apparently no :-((

I switched off AGP, I even switched off USB - all to no avail (well,
the crashes _seem_ to be a bit less often now, but they're still there).

In fact, I have all but given up by now - I just press that "Save"
button, and - together with the rather tough ext2 fs ;-) - I haven't
lost more than a couple of minutes of work. I really like KDE2, and I
just _hope_ that there will be an update for the nvidia driver some
time!

So do I ;-)!

Interesting ... I already thought about buying a different graphics
card - they're not _that_ expensive any more ;-)!

Best wishes

running SuSE 7.1 with the 2.4.3 kernel released version
       xfree 3.0.3 "modified" by SuSE
       nvidia .9-767 (geforce2 mx card)
       kde 2.1.1
       tb santa cruz soundcard
       soho (ndc) nic
       tekram 390f
       2 udma66 harddrives
       1 scsi harddrive
       2 scsi cdrom
       1 scsi cd writer

       NO crashes

Don't believe that it is the drivers now; have had to compile the drivers
each time I compile/re-compile the kernel.

You mean 4.0.3 i assume?

I recompiled the drivers every time I recompiled the kernel X won't start without

the NVidia module when it isn't compiled with your current kernel.

I always forgot to look at the documentation first before the crash :-)

Strange thing right now is that I'm trying everything to crash the box
(just to see if Magic-SysRq works :-)
but it doesn't crash.

 02:25:22 up  6:00,  7 users,  load average: 0.65, 0.69, 0.46

I'm not sure if I reloaded the NVidia module after upgrading X (if that is
necessary). to XF 4.03 (I restarted X though)

I'm trying to keep this box up as long as possible, and see if it stays
stable. If so I'll report it to this newsgroup,
but we'll see...

Right now I need some sleep :-)

Hi,
I have similar problems , XFree-4.0.2, kernel-2.4.3, Nvidia drivers 0.97
(perhaps something wrong with this combination ?!?)
And my solution? It is easy, I downgraded to XFree-4.0.1 and everything is
working well now.

...
OOPs, it is xfree 4.0.3.

I had to recompile the NVidia module after going from XF 4.01 to XF 4.02
before X would work; recompiled NVidia "just in case" when going from
XF 4.0.2 to XF 4.0.3.  In fact, used to do a "reinstall" of the aureal
drivers also "for the heck of it" since it didn't take that long.

Have switch to the TB Santa Cruz which had the Cirrus Logic chipset and
the "support" drivers for linux is at the Cirrus Logic website since TB
evidently won't support linux.  At least the Cirrus Logic drivers are
set up as part of the sound driver selection config which definitely saves
a step and is "easier".

Some of us are having memory leak problems with NVIDIA drivers that cause
hangs and other problems....If you are using these drivers could you run
"top" in another window and watch memory usage of X and others. If
you can than compare with nv driver. Consensus so far is NVIDIA=180MB,
nv=53MB. Plus the memory leaks causes some applications to grow in
memory for ever and hang the system. Some other cards also report
similar problems thus the leaking function may not be the driver but a
function elsewhere that certain drivers are using and others not. If
you find this memory problem report to NIVIDIA so they start investigating.

Hi All,

At

ftp://ftp1.detonator.nvidia.com/pub/drivers/english/XFree86_40/

I saw some of the files have a new datestamps, This afternoon the directory
for 0.9-769 had Apr 12, but now Apr 10,
after downloading and untarring the stuff I saw some of the files are
changed at least the dates, diff told me they were the same:

grep Apr

lrwxrwxrwx    1 502      502            10 Apr 12 22:52 libGL.so ->
libGL.so.1
lrwxrwxrwx    1 502      502            16 Apr 12 22:52 libGL.so.1 ->
libGL.so.1.0.769
lrwxrwxrwx    1 502      502            17 Apr 12 22:52 libglx.so ->
libglx.so.1.0.769

I just installed them, I'm not sure if it fixes the problem, but you never know..

Hi,

I got sick of the nvidia drivers and closed source policy.

I dropped my nvidia card and bought an Matrox, this things goes woopie!

Finally X works like a charm, although 3D is slower but divx is more than 15 frames
faster and it isn't even tweaked yet!

bye,

Frodo
