upgrade xfree: preinst.sh won't run

Post by dun.. » Sun, 15 Sep 1996 04:00:00

installing f series of xfree over existing xfree. have backed up /usr/X11R6
and copied preinst.sh in to /var/tmp, then changed back to /usr/X11R6. when i
run " sh /var/tmp/preinst.sh" i get the fallowing error message.

:command not found:
:command not found:
:command not found:
:command not found:
'/var/tmp/preinst.sh: syntax error near unexpected token 'in
'/var/tmp/preinst.sh: /var/tmp/preinst.sh: line 64: 'case "$response" in

i looked at the code in preinst.sh on line 64 and took a guess that the
'in' did not belong there and removed it and saved the file. the only effect
there was the same error message as above less the 'in' in each of the last 2
lines.
any idea why i can't run the preinst.sh? should i install from scratch
instead? thanks      john

1. Error running preinst.sh to setup to install XFree86 3.3.1

I am running linux Red Hat 4.2 kernel 2.0.30 and having problem installing
XFree86 3.3.1 .  I get the following messages when running the preinst.sh
as suggested in the install doc:

: command not found:
: command not found:
: command not found:
: command not found:
: command not found:
: command not found:
' var/tmp/preinst.sh: syntax error near unexpected token `in
' var/tmp/preinst.sh: /var/tmp/preinst.sh: line 60 'case " `arch`" in

I am new at this but did attempt to look at preinst.sh and don't find any
problem.
Has anyone run into this problem or any idea what I did wrong?

Thanks in advance,
Hoang
