: I apologize for the previous incomplete version of this posting. I hate
: posting stuff from netscape with my cat wandering back and forth
: through the keyboard. The article should read:
Ah, pets and computer usually don't mix well....
: I recently upgraded my Winjet-64 PCI (using Cirrus Logic 5434 chip)
: to 2MB of memory and I thought that I would be able to get more than
: 256 colors. Unfortunately, all my attempts to set it up with the SVGA
: server for more than 256 colors have failed. I think I've tried all
: simple tricks listed in the documentation (disabling linear addressing,
: etc.) All I get is a messy screen, sometimes the server hangs up.
: I wonder is anybody has been able to set this card for > 256 colors
: and can share his/her wisdom with me. My monitor is NEC MultiSync XV17,
: but I don't think that it matters a lot.
I haven't used this particular card but I have the CL5434 chipset with
2MB of memory and have been able to get it working at 8,16,24[32?] bpp.
with the corresponding limitations on screen resolution. I'm using the
NEC XE15 monitor so that helps too. I did have to enable linear addr
and if you used the xf86config script it should have given you the
/etc/XF86Config file with comments stating which address to start the
linear addr for PCI bus systems.
I have the info at home and can post or email if necessary. It does work
and more color is always good in my book.
