O'reily and Associate's Running Linux.  There aren't any pretty pictures,
but it explains linux in a easy to understand way.

Help for newbie - Book

As a newbie myself, two books I've found very useful are:

Running Linux - by Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman

And:

A Practical Guide To Linux - By Mark G. Sobell (with a Foreword by the man
himself, Linus Torvalds)

Also I've found the installation guide that comes with Redhat very useful,
though that all depends on what distribution you're using.
