As a newbie myself, two books I've found very useful are:
Running Linux - by Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman
And:
A Practical Guide To Linux - By Mark G. Sobell (with a Foreword by the man
himself, Linus Torvalds)
Also I've found the installation guide that comes with Redhat very useful,
though that all depends on what distribution you're using.
