Hi; I've got a Thinkpad 750 w/ a monochrome LCD panel, 4 megs of
physical RAM and lotsa swap, and I think I have an acceptable XF86Config
file, listing the chipset as wd90c30 and double-checked numbers on
everything else.  Nonetheless, I have not been able to start the
X-server successfully yet.  (v. 3.3 from the slackware release.)  When I
type startx or X at the command line, I get lots of innocuous messages,
the screen flickers for a second, and then goes blank, except that the
bottom third or so is covered with the wallpaper from Windows 3.1 (on a
separate partition).  The flickering is not from clock probing, since I
have a clocks line in XF86Config, and I guess the strange appearance of
Win3.1's wallpaper is due to some kind of buffer on the video board.

Anyways, I am pretty stumped, and I'd love to hear from anyone who's
set up X on the thinkpad 750 before, or who has an idea what might be
going on here.  (BTW, I've seen the page on 'Linux on the IBM Thinkpad',
and none of the issues covered there seems to be relevant here.)  The
only thing I can think of is that I might have too little physical RAM
for XF86, but it'll cost me $70 to find out for sure.

Thanks for your time!

Derrick Higgins

1. ThinkPad 750 Cs & XF86 3.1

Does anyone have X11R6 running on their ThinkPad?  If so, could you send
me your Xconfig file and any modifications to the X Server you had to
make to get everything working?

Thanks,
Robert
