X and fvwm have 100% CPU usage???

Post by Entrop » Thu, 28 May 1998 04:00:00

Hi

I'm trying to set up XFree on a Linux system, but as soon as it starts X
takes about 60% of the CPU and fvwm takes about 40%. Does anyone know what
could cause this to happen?

The system:
Pentium 166MMX w/ 16MB RAM
+/- 600MB Linux partition, with Slackware Linux
XFree 3.3.1
2.0.33 kernel (patched up from 2.0.30)
ViRGE/DX, 2MB RAM, with SVGA server running at 1024x768x64K
Microsoft two button mouse

The system appears to be operational, but it takes ages for anything to
happen so I'm not sure.

TIA
Bruce

Try to start "top" in an xterm. What does it say?. How much memory is taken
by "X" and the other Tasks?. I think perhaps your memory is the problem. You
have 16MB, that should "normaly" be enough for X. But depending on your
config / other Programs running in the background it is too few.

Well, I switched away from X using C-A-F1, then used top at the console.
It seems to be about a 65/35 to 60/40 split between X and fvwm. It isn't
thrashing the hard drive, so I don't think it's chewing swap (and
running X and fvwm on my home machine still leaves 22/32MB free). I also
discovered that if I change .xinitrc to start xterm instead of fvwm, it
is fine (although I don't have a windows manager). If I start fvwm from
the xterm it does the same thing.

Any other ideas?
TIA
Bruce

|        Yeah, but you're taking the universe out of context.        |

1. Solaris 8 100% CPU usage, but doing nothing in fact...

Hello,

I am new in Solaris 8. I just downloaded the OS from SUN's webpage. I
got it installed fine. But everytime I login, the CPU usage is already
100% and never go down. There's really no work load as I just login as
root and did nothing else.

Anyone knows what's the problem? All my hardware are in the HCL only
the motherboard isn't (is it the problem?). My hardware is an AOpen
AX63Pro motherboard with 3COM's 3C905B and a Creative Riva TNT2. I
understand that my AOpen is a VIA Apollo 133A chipset. I have searched
the access1 webpage and found no patches for this matter. Anyone knows
if there's really a patch which I just missed?

Thanks so much,
Simba
