XFree86 Always in 320x200 Mode

Post by Denis Foo Kun » Tue, 10 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Ok, This will probably sound very basic to all of you, but I am new in
this area, and I need help...  Badly.
After having struggled with XFree86 for hours, I still cannot get it to
run in any resolution other than 320x200.  It always tells me that it is
using the built in mode of 320x200.  I have tried editing the XF86Config
file, and I think that I have all the settings for default SVGA in
640x480x256 Ok.  But, it will still put me in 320x200 (Grrrr!).
        I have a pentium 200 and a matrox millenium card with 4Mb.  I am
running Red Hat Linux 3.0.3 with XFree86 version 3.1.2.  This is pretty
old software (especially since XFree86 v3.3 is available since Thursday
morning), but I got it from a book, on a CD.
I would greatly appreciate any help.  Thanks a lot.

I'm having the same difficulty,  using a Diamond 3D 3400 card and the SVGA
server.   No matter what I do to the config files,  I get 320x200 ...
it's unusable.

3.1.2 doesn't support the Millenium, I think.  Get 3.3 and run
XF86Config(?).

I've been having the same trouble though with the Diamond 3d 3000 card,
using hte SVGA 3.2 driver ... This card works fine in SVGA mode but only
at 320x200,  and I don't know why,  because it certainly supports the
faster dotclocks/refresh rates needed for 640x480 in SGVA mode.

Same for me, although with Oak Tech.
However, I switched to XF86_VGA16, it works ok.

It defaults to 320x200 when it doesn't recognize the chipset.

In XF86 3.2, the Diamond 3D 3000 is supported by the XF86_S3V server, but
requires a patch.

In XF86 3.3, the Diamond 3D 3000 is supported by both the XF86_S3V and
XF86_SVGA servers.

In general, get the latest XF86 release and read the release notes.

You can get all the info, and download instructions, from:

        http://www.xfree86.org/

And read the FAQ file they maintain - most of your questions should be
answered right there.

1. Getting XFree86 3.1 to run in 320x200 mode

I have tried the suggestions in recent messages on how to get
XF86_SVGA to run in 320x200 mode, to no avail. It starts running, but
the screen that comes up is just a bunch of vertical white lines
(though the server and clients are there!).  My XF86Config has these
sections:

Section "Device"
    Identifier  "generic 256 VGA color"
    Chipset     "generic"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Driver      "svga"
    Device      "generic 256 VGA color"
    Monitor     "Nokia 447x"
    Subsection  "Display"
        Depth       8
        ViewPort    0 0
#        Virtual            320 200
    EndSubsection
EndSection

My setup is this:

Linux 1.1.53
486/66 w/ 16 megs o' ram
Number Nine GXE Level 11
Nokia 447x monitor
XFree86 3.1
IDE harddrives

note, I have X symlinked to XF86_SVGA and it clearly parses output
correctly, which I dump here:
