Fonts reside under /usr/lib/X11/fonts (which is a link to /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts
I believe).  Under here you should have three or more directories, misc, 75dpi
and 100dpi (depending on the fonts which you installed).  If you don't have
these (esp. misc and 75dpi which are really the minimum) then go back and
get them (they're on the X installation disks).  In each directory you could
try running mkfontdir - this sets up the directory for use by X. This should
be done by the installation but may not be.  Next, check your XF86Config
file in /usr/lib/X11.  This should have some lines talking about fontpaths.
Make sure that these are not commented out and point to the correct
directories, ie a list of three or so.

Charlie

BTW: Dunno what you did with the fonts.alias file but you may want to change
it back once misc starts working.

HELP!! -- Cannot find default font 'fixed'

Post by Steve Charter » Wed, 15 Nov 1995 04:00:00

Hi,

I have Linux (slackware) with XFree86 3.1.2 ona P75. When I installed it there
were no problems but now I seem to lack the "default font 'fixed'" (but I have
managed to edit the fonts.alias file to avoid this, I made fidex alias to a
different font) and also I lack "default cursor font 'cursor'" which should be
in a file cursor.pcf.Z

Any ideas why I don't have these and more to the point where I can get them.

Thanks

Steve

P.S. I have an ATI Mach64 1MB and have experienced not problems (I managed to
gt X working once but not since then).

1. default font 'fixed' not found

I am unable to startx after a system crash. I get the message:

Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!
Fatal server error:
Could not open default font 'fixed'

I have seen other messages posted on this topic, but the recommendations
were to ensure xfs was running, which it is. My font path list in XF86Config
is:

FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"

Any suggestions??

Thanks
