Some Help setting up KDE Window Manager?

Some Help setting up KDE Window Manager?

Post by Paul Travers » Mon, 02 Feb 1998 04:00:00

First, can someone tell me where I can get libgif2?  I am running
Debian, and it is listed on the Debian webpage, but when I go to
download it, it says the file is not there.  It is not on my Debian CD,
either.

Second, is libc6 an upgrade to libc5?  I try to install libc6, but it
says it cannot install because it conflicts with libc5.

Third, how do you install .rpm files?  I have the newer version of the
qt libraries because the qt version I have is 1.2, and I need 1.3.

Finally, I am now using twm for my window manager, how do I set up
programs in a menu?  Right now I can only run one program at a time from
the xterm, because when I run one, the xterm doesn't accept any commands
until the program it is running is finished.

Sorry if any of these questions are trivial.  I am new to Linux, just
plowing my way through so I can get rid of Windows 95 (well, put it on a
smaller partition, anyway.)

In the kdesupport package which should be available from where
you got the other Kde packages.

It is a switch to glibc, the GNU libc.  I would not call it upgrade,
it is a completely new library. You should upgrade your whole system
if you want to use libc6. And libc6 still has problems...

Download the latest Qt 1.32 from www.troll.no

if you start programs in xterm adding a "&" at the end, the programs
are started in background and will not block your term.

No problem at all. The first steps in Unix/Linux are not that easy.

I have the kdesupport deb package, installed it, but when I install kdebase is
still says that libgif2 is not installed.

I am going to try and reinstall the whole system from the debian ftp server.
The base files I have is an older version, so this should upgrade to the newer
one supporting libc6?  The qt package wants libc6 so I need it to run KDE.
Right?

The qt I downloaded was in rpm format, but I got a deb package from
www.debian.org.  Don't need the rpm information now, but qt won't install
because of dependency problems.  I guess my distribution is just old.

Thank you very much :)

1. Help with KDE desktop manager : "kdmrc" init file forgets its settings between boots ...

Hello,

Big mystery around ...

Whenever i try to add a new session type to the K Desktop Management (that
is : adding for instance "enlightenment" to the Session line of the "kdmrc"
file), it goes alright until next boot.

By next boot, the new settings have magically disapperared, and the kdmrc
file looks has regenerated as the original one, without my settings.

I have Mandrake 6.0, and there seems to be 2 location for this file one
beeing in /root/.kde/../config, and the other in /usr/share/config (if I
remember well). I changed both to see what happens, but no result.

Thanks in advance for any clues
