s3 Trio64 & 16 bit display

Post by Cyril Declei » Fri, 13 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I've got a 2 Mo S3 Trio 64 graphics card that tuns fine in 8 bit mode.

When I try to run X in 16 bit depth, the screen just hangs black, which
forces me to kill the server.
(Using a good monitor, I read a "out of synch" on the screen).

Shame is that w*****s 95 runs fine up to 32 bit-mode !

Has anybody a clue ?

Here are the results of SuperProbe :

-------
SuperProbe Version 2.14 (20 May 1997)

First video: Super-VGA
        Chipset: S3 Trio64 (Port Probed)
        Memory:  2048 Kbytes
        RAMDAC:  Generic 8-bit pseudo-color DAC
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode))

And some X -probeonly results :

Thanks for any help.

1. Can't allocate colors for 16 bit display - works for 8 bits

: I have successfuly setup a gray scale color map on my Linux Pentium
: X Windows using an 8 bit display, but when I go to a 16 bit X Server,
: it refuses to allocate the colors. It also works fine on SGIs and
: Suns.

: Very simply, I
:       1) Open the Display
:       2) Get a colormap
:       3) Attempt to Allocate colors in the colormap

When in 16 bit mode you enter TrueColor mode. You cannot allocate colours
in TrueColor mode since there is no colour map in which to allocate entries.
