One for the Linux Boffs

I'm new to Linux but not totally dumb. I want to connect to the net through
Linux and have set up ppp but I need to know how to configure the IP's and
such because I've got a network card in but no IP. I dont know what IP to
use for myself nor where to enter in the DNS numbers of my web server. Can
any help?

Cheers

If you're going to use a network card, you don't need ppp.

Which method will you be using to connect to the net?

And which distribution and version of Linux are you using?

We need a LOT more information to be helpful...

Sorry. I have a network card but want to access the net via a modem. I'm
using RedHat 5.1. Any other info?

Cheers

That's probably enough.  :-)

What you probably want to do is create a ppp interface (a serial TCP/IP
interface) and configure it to use your modem.

One way to get a lot of information about this is to go to DejaNews and
do a search in the *linux* newsgroups for "Red Hat ppp".

There are two different configuration tools which are bundled with Red
Hat 5.1 (linuxconf and the Red Hat Control Panel) which should make
this fairly "easy", assuming of course that you don't have a modem with
software dependencies, and that your ISP supports the commonly used
authentication protocols like PAP.

You'll have to find out whether your ISP uses any kind of authentication
(e.g. PAP, CHAP): most do.  In the PPP-Howto (which is a *very* long
document, but you really should read it, along with the ISP-Hookup-HOWTO
and (hope I remember the address right,
http://www.linuxmafia.org/ppp.html), there's a list of questions to ask
your ISP before you start out: otherwise, you'll be in the land of trial
and error.

Or to put what I just said much shorter: RTFM, and that linuxmafia doc =)

The network config in RH 5.1 is pretty useful, and automates a lot of the
stuff the other documents advise you to do by hand: but *if* you follow
these docs (especially the linuxmafia one, it's very step-by-step), you
should be up and running.  If you have KDE installed (you need not be
actually running it), you can use kppp, which is fairly easy to install
from X.

Good luck.
