Tandenburg 525 Meg tape question

Tandenburg 525 Meg tape question

Post by John Saunde » Fri, 12 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Somebody has offered to sell me a tape drive. It's new and packaged in a
DIGITAL box for sale by DIGITAL. It is supposedly ~500 Meg in size. When I
looked at the drive I saw that it's made by Tandenburg. It takes QIC tapes
that are the same size as the QIC 150 tapes that my old Archive Viper drive
takes. The tape that comes with the drive didn't have any recognisable model
number, but it looks to be of the DC6150/DC6250 style of tape (bit obviously
large capacity). Does anybody know what this drive is, is it a 525 Meg drive
that takes DC6525 tapes? Is it a reasonable drive to use with Linux? Also
would it be able to read (and hopefully write) the smaller DC6150 and DC6250
tapes (I have about 25 of them I don't want to trash)?

Cheers.

1. 525 meg tape drive (7207-011) and retension

Query for you netlanders ... has anyone found out a way to defeat or
turn off the retension status on the new 525 Meg tape drives?  Since
it is defined as an "other" type of tape drive, SMIT and chdev and
chcfg do not permit the retension flag to be used.  Documentation
implies that the restriction lies in the system and not in the drive
but we haven't been able to find out how to NOT make it retension
on tape change/drive reset.

Any ideas?
