Sound Blaster Live - How do you Activate a sound card

Post by Reaga » Thu, 26 Aug 1999 04:00:00

Hi People,
I recently installed Linux 6.0, and have been getting along with it
relatively nicely with one major exception.  I can't get any sound.  I
can't even find where to add a sound card driver or change settings.  My
computer has a Sound Blaster Live (Value) card on it.  It wasn't listed on
Linux's compatibility list, but c'mon... its Sound Blaster... I thought
for sure some one would have a driver for Live! or that at least one of
the sound blaster drivers would work.

My question is... how do I install a driver for my Sound Blaster, and
where do I find one for Live! if it exists.  Has anyone else tried to use
Live! with linux?

Sound Blaster Live - How do you Activate a sound card

There's a driver on Creative's developer site, but I couldn't get it to work
with RH6.  It said it was the wrong kernel version, but it does support
2.2.5.  I just put a cheap Ensoniq in there till someone writes a better
driver.

Sound Blaster Live - How do you Activate a sound card

Unrot13 this;

Gene Heskett sends Greetings to cjh ;

My modules.conf, or whatever file installs the emu10k_3b driver, has an
option line on the next line giving it a -f.  That is supposed to work
for all kernels 2.2.5 and up in the 2.2.x series.  Its worked ok with
the 2.2.9, 2.2.10 , and the 2.2.10-ac12 kernels here.

It does seem to need help, it occasionally stumbles for a few
milliseconds here, and even the right kernel version does it.
I get the impression its a DMA or IRQ conflict of some sort.

Sound Blaster Live - How do you Activate a sound card

The driver beta0.3 from Creative Labs now works with RedHat6.0 out of box
kernel. After I recompiled the kernel, it doesn't work anymore. So you can
try that if yours is a standard kernel.

Sound Blaster Live - How do you Activate a sound card

Kind of an old message to respond to but I recently had the same problem
(sound worked until I updated my kernel). I kept getting reams of
"unresolved symbol" errors. After several days of scouring the Net I
finally found a solution. In the Makefile for emu10k1, change the
MODVERSIONS line to read "MODVERSIONS = y" Mine was set to auto but that
obviously wasn't working.

FYI, I found my solution at http://www.euronet.nl/~mailme/
All sorts of useful stuff on running the SBLive! under Linux including
lots of troubleshooting info. Creative should have a link to it...

1. Sound blaster PCI128 and Sound blaster live

Hi,
I am trying to setup linux (rh5.2) on 2 machines currently.
One of the machines has a Soundblaster PCI128 card on it and the other a
Soundblaster Live card.

I tried sndconf on the machine with the PCI128 it did detect it as the ensoniq
sb pci128 card but when it tried to play the sound sample it failed saying

sox: can't open output file /dev/dsp: operation not supported by device

What's the deal?? I tried chmod 666 /dev/dsp to no avail.

As for the SB live card. I have not tried setting up the sound at all.
I keep seeing posts saying that it is as yet unsupported but there was a
message way back in nov or dec 98 that some one had succeded in using the
ensoniq 1370 for it too.

Any help will be appreciated.
                                Arun.
