Sound on a Gateway Solo 9100

Sound on a Gateway Solo 9100

I am running a laptop (Gateway Solo 9100) with Slackware 8.1 (Linux
kernel 2.4.18) and am having trouble getting sound working. I recently
got a minor improvement, as I went from having no sound at all to some
noise, but sound files now play by repeating small (0.5 seconds or so)
samples two or three times in a row before moving on. Based on people
with similar problems online, I currently have the following:

/etc/modules.conf:
alias sound-slot-1 opl3sa2
post-install sound-slot-1 /usr/local/bin/aumix -f /etc/.aumixrc -L

Quote:>/dev/null 2>&1 || :

pre-remove sound-slot-1 /usr/local/bin/aumix -f /etc/.aumixrc -S
Quote:>/dev/null 2>&1 || :

options sound dmabuf=1
#alias synth0 opl3
options opl3sa2 io=0x388
alias synth0 opl3sa2
options opl3sa2 mss_io=0x530 irq=7 dma=0 dma2=1 mpu_io=0x330 io=0x370

/etc/rc.d/rc.modules:
/sbin/modprobe soundcore
/sbin/modprobe sound
/sbin/modprobe mpu401
/sbin/modprobe ad1848
/sbin/modprobe opl3sa2

(yes, they're all used, as /sbin/lsmod says:
opl3sa2                 5868   0
ad1848                 19244   0 [opl3sa2]
mpu401                 18660   0 [opl3sa2]
sound                  52748   0 [opl3sa2 ad1848 mpu401]
soundcore               3460   6 [sound])

I would appreciate any advice/help you can offer in getting my sound
to work correctly - please write me at ude DOT tim AT kevisg but with
that address reversed.

Thank you,
Gary Sivek
