hello,

I would like to know if anyone has been succesfull in installing support
for a Matrox Millenium G-200 graphics board in linux.
I have tried to use the drivers for other matrox boards on this board
but without  much succes.  I should add that I am not an expert on this.

So, if anyone has succeeded in installing this board succesfully please
let me know how.

Thanks in advance.

Well, that kind of depends if you want to pay money to make the card
work or not... Take a look at http://www.xig.com.

I am also new to linux.... so forgive me for sounding dim... as most newbies
do....

I have the same card... 8mb.... not sure bout u....

I could only get the VGA16 server to work on my Redhat 5.1 Installation with
this card...

There are commercial servers available that support the Millenium
G200......if u can't wait for X server support from XFree86 i would check
the commercial ones out...

http://www.xig.com/board/ax/matrox.html

i found this company on the matrox web page...

good luck... i will be stickin with VGA16 or if i get desperate enuf
downgrading my card ( probably a cheap S3 )till there is support for our
card... :(

To aspiring G200 owners:

I just saw a rumor (look for subject: Re: G200 in Redhat 5.1 in this NG) that
XFree got the specs from Matrox, it was discussed on a German newsgroup.

But the (free :) driver is a long way off (?). Another alternative is to pay $99
for a commercial driver, haven't heard anything about the XiGraphics one
(www.xigraphics.com). This is my back-up plan.

And there is another avenue which I will try (I just bought a Mystique G200,
coming in next week!), and that is using the VESA frame buffer technique. The
catch here is that you need to install and use a development Kernel which uses
experimental drivers etc. Someone mentioned it worked for them. I'll post my
results when I try it.

Anyone have any dirt on if the Mystique is a prohibitive choice over the
Millenium G200 ? I want the Mystique to get the TV output :)

I would not do that if I were you. Not because I don't like Xig, but because
you are encouraging Intel (and others now and in the future) to keep refusing
to give programming docs to XFree86.

If many people just buy a commercial server instead of using XFree86 when
their card is not supported, those idiot chip makers will never have a reason
to release docs, and in the long run that will only result in more of those
companies refusing to give us docs.

Don't buy cards from companies that refuse to provide free docs, even if you
are willing to shell out money for a server. You're shooting yourself in the
foot.

Whenever I hear people advocate this option, I'm a bit confused.

Instead of spending $100 on a piece of software that will only be useful
until XFree86 puts out a G200 server, why not just spend $80 on a
supported graphics card, like the Diamond Viper 330, and use that
temporarily?

That way, when XFree86 does put out their server, you have an extra
graphics card sitting around, rather than an extra piece of software.

I had never thought of it that way, but that is indeed an extremely good
thought.

I'd suggest, as an even cheaper alternative, going after one of the S3V
cards that are likely sitting at around $35 now.

But it is certainly a better option to spend $80 on additional hardware
(that you might be able to get $40 out of, six months later) than it is
to spend $100 on software that will prove unnecessary in six months.

Not only this, but a side benefit is that hardware manufacturers who's
hardware is supported under Linux gets an $80 reward for doing so.

More like a $5 reward, at least to the manufacturer.

Consider:
a) Channels keep a lot of the money;
b) It costs *something* to build the video card.

The fact that you paid $80 doesn't mean that the manufacturer gets
something anywhere *near* $80.

Hello!

Perhaps you should look at:
http://www.suse.de/XSuSE/index.html#matrox

This is a free server, which should support the Matrox Millenium
G-200.

If you are very cool, you could send me a mail, if you had success or
not!!

Thomas

I installed a Matrox G200 8Mo AGP + the SuSE server
yesterday. Everything has been running perfectly so far

1. Matrox Millenium G-200 Drivers

As with most people I talk to about Windows (serious users that is), I'm
pretty frustrated with crashes when I want to do anything "out of the
ordinary" during setups.  Hence, I've checked into Linux.

I have Red Hat v. 5.1.  I would like to run Xwindows but I can't figure out
how to configure my video card correctly.  It is an 8MB Matrox Millenium
G-200 (AGP bus).

The driver doesn't appear when I'm doing the setup so I tried selecting the
'unlisted video card' but this doesn't seem to work.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Jim
