HP 2200C Scanner and Mandrake 8.2, recognized, but doesn't work?

I was setting up my computer yesterday with Mandrake 8.2, assuming when I
got to installing VMWare that I would disable anything Mandrake wanted to
do with the scanner, uninstall sane and xsane and run the scanner (a USB
scanner, HP 2200C) via VMWare. Well, Mandrake picked up the scanner
properly, configured it (so it says) and even made a happy little icon
for XSane on the background with a direct reference to /dev/usb/scanner0.
So now I'm tempted. I'd rather scan natively and so now I'm tempted to
try to get this working. The problem is, when I start it up I get an
error saying.. "no devices available." Other times I start it and it just
hangs. So now what? Is there anyway to troubleshoot from here, or should
I give up and just run it through VMWare. I'm a relative Linux newbie, so
I'm not exactly sure how to start tackling this. Also, if I decide to
just go with VMWare, how do I disable the device so VMWare can pick it
up?

Have you checked Mandrake's online Hardware Compatibility guide?  Chances
are if it's not listed there, and not listed at the SANE site, then it
probably won't work.

I checked on Sane's site. Not sure about mandrake. It's definitely not
listed under Sane. I just wasn't sure if this was for real, though, since
Mandrake acted like it picked it up fine, model and everything and
claimed to have configured it for me, complete with an icon on the
desktop.

Preston,
Try checking permissions for the device file for the scanner in
the /dev directory. You may have to change the permissions to 666.
Also, when you boot up the system, do you see a message about the USB
device being found. Check your /proc/bus/usb directory. Do a 'more' on
the devices file to see if the scanner is listed. Then, do a 'more' on
the drivers file to see if the driver for the device is found. Also,
check in the /dev directory to see if you have a link from the scanner
device to the /dev/scanner or /dev/usbscanner. Another thing to check
is in the /etc/sane.d directory, check the hp.conf file to make sure
it has the proper information in it; i.e. for my HP6300 SCSI scanner, I
have:  scsi HP
        /dev/sg1

Hi Preston,

I'm happily using the ScanJet 2200C under Linux using the _latest_, 1.0.7
version of SANE. It was trivial to install and configure. Just make sure
you have the latest SANE version, read the general documentation and
Plustek backend documentation. It would be generally needed to load some
usb modules, modifiy some lines in the sane configuration files and enjoy
scanning under Linux.

If you really need more instructions, just ask.

Regards,

I replied, but I don't think it got through. I am running 1.0.7
apparantly. So says  Mandrake 8.2. Yet it still doesn't work. XSane hangs
then gives an error saying no devices were available. Also, something
weird. If I fire off XSane from a prompt without running it in the
background (&) I will get an error after XSane dies referring to Epson.
Why would it be trying to use an Epson backend? Is that what this means?
