Any experience w/Pentium II + 440LX chipset?

Post by Hyong L » Sat, 20 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Hello everyone,

I may be ordering a Pentium II machine to run some x-ray astronomy packages
under Linux. I would like to know whether anyone has used a machine with the
new Intel 440LX chipset, since it looks as though the cloners are all
switching to motherboards based on this new chipset. I'm not too concerned
about AGP since this machine will primarily be used to run FPU intensive
programs, but I am interested in using SDRAMs.

Please let me know of your experiences, either in this group or email or
(preferably) both. Thanks much.

We have a very memory-intensive program, and recently
tested it on 3 Gateway machines, including one LX system:

performance normalized to 200 MHz PPro:
200 MHz PPro, ED0    1.00
266 MHz PII, EDO     1.27
233 MHz PII, SDRAM   1.28

...so it looks like the SDRAM did make a difference...

Did the PPro 200 have the 512k cache?
