UDMA help needed ALi15x3

Post by Bram Verwei » Sat, 08 Sep 2001 11:23:51

Hi all,

I am struggling to get my hard disks UDMA feature to work. I've got
an AMD K6-2 3D on a Asus P5A motherboard with the Aladdin V chipset.
My harddisk is a Quantum Fireball LM15. More details at the end. Is
there anybody out there who has a similar configuration and can give
me some useful hints in this matter?

Here is the relevant passage of dmesg:

ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with
idebus=xx
ALI15X3: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 78
PCI: No IRQ known for interrupt pin A of device 00:0f.0. Please try
using pci=biosirq.
ALI15X3: chipset revision 193
ALI15X3: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xd400-0xd407, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xd408-0xd40f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
hda: QUANTUM FIREBALLP LM15, ATA DISK drive
hdb: CD-ROM 48X/TKU, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with
idebus=xx
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
hda: status error: status=0x50 { DriveReady SeekComplete }
[...]
After this dma is disabled.

So far, I have been searching the web for help without succes. I
worked my way through
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA.html, and unfortunately
arrived at point 9.4 (if you still can't get it to work, post in this
newsgroup). In the process I flashed my BIOS, I upgraded to the 2.9
kernel, I tried the 2.9-ac7 kernel, I tried the 2.7 kernel, I tried to
use the 2.7 kernel with Andre Hedrick's latest IDE patch, all with no
succes.

However, there seems to be some hope as according to
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-7.html the Aladdin V
chipset is supported, and I did find reports on the internet of people
who had similar configurations working fine.

Any help is welcome,

Bram

1. Need Help with Promise Ultra66 UDMA/66 card

I am trying to install Red Hat v5.2 on a system with a Promise Ultra66
UDMA/66 interface card that has a 20.4GB Western Digital UDMA66 drive
attached to the primary interface. My problem is that the install will not
recognize the card and so I can't continue with the install on the hard
disk.

I understand that Red Hat v5.2 does not support the Ultra66, but I have also
understood that there is a way to force the installation to recognize the
card using some kernel parameters.

I am new to Linux and would appreciate any help I can get.
