experiencing the same problem. I didn't fix it yet (lack of time) but
what I am going to do is just download the OSS drivers for the AWE32 and
recompile my kernel. I had the same error message before with other
devices and the cause was simply it wasn't supported by the kernel.
Recompiling it fixed things.
