I got *lots* of compilation errors from the package I initially downloaded.
They looked a lot like headers had changed. Of course, I'm now on
my work (NT) machine and some months have passed, so I have zero
idea what the problems were. Also, of course, I've downloaded, installed
and upgraded a number of other things in the meantime.

Quite likely. I was still in the *very* early stages of learning about
Linux
and how to do things then. I think I've now progressed from *very* early
