Runs Just Fine (tm) from what every one on the newsgroups say. A largeQuote:> -or-

I've seen posts about how non Intel x86 type processors dont work in
configuration x, y or z. As near as I can see, processor upgrades with
slow MB's or stupid BIOS'es are the main cause of the errors.
I have a new MB with a Cyrix in it. Its works extremely well, and the
price performance of the machine was terrific. Since I got rid of the
AMD ethercard that did not like busmaster and cyrix sleep mode, it also
runs cooler than an Intel.

Judging purely from Spec92 numbers...
System Name CPU Clock Cache SPECint92 SPECfp92
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEC 5000/120 R3000 20mhz 64k/64k (I/D cache) 13.8 18.4 Jun93
Micronics M4P 80486DX4 100mhz 256kext+ 16k int 51.4 26.6 Mar94
(from ftp.cdf.toronto.edu:/pub/spectable)
I would hope that a 133 would be faster than a 100, so the AMD would
have roughly 4 times the integer performance and twice the floating point
performance.
Sidestepping the issue of Linux, NetBSD 1.2 supports the DEC
5000/120 and is roughly equivalent to Linux. Try ftp.netbsd.org
directory /pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.2/pmax and grab the file INSTALL for
a brief summary of the support limitations.
My guess is that the AMD would be a better choice for speed and
versatility, but the Decstation would have a much higher geek-factor.
Similar to the way my AMD 486DX4/100 is much faster than my Sparc SLC,
but not nearly as much fun to hack on. Oh and the fun I have in
CompUSA asking for parts/software...
"Uh, a SparcStation? Does it run Windows?"
"Sure, I have X11R6 installed right now..."
"Uh, let me ask my manager..."

A bad joke, isn't it?
Noone can sincerely compare those machines! The old 20MHz R3000 CPU in the
DECstation is approximately as fast as a good 486DX33. The rest of the
machine is standard workstation hardware, so no issue.
If you want to compare MIPS RISC against x86 then make it fair and take two
equivalent machines (though no up-to-date MIPS machines are available from
DEC, i.e. R4000, R4400 or R10000).

Hi all;
I have a situation in which i need to have 3-5 PC's connected to the
internet at the same time. I would like to setup my server as an
"Gateway" so that the workstations may log in and access the
internet....
1) Can i do this??? <i belive i can... the internet "IS" UNIX!!>
2) How do i do this?
I am running Red Hat 4.1 on all my computers...... Thanks in
advance...
P.S. Could you tell me about specific software or scripts needed.....

Most recomended is IP-Masquerading:
One PC has the modem and makes the connection with your ISP.
The ISP assigns this PC a IP number when the PPP link is
established. This PC has IP-forwarding and IP-Masquerading
support in the kernel. All the local PCs use this one PC as
the gateway on the local ethernet (the other PCs send all
their non-local packets to the gateway for him to route).
This one PC re-stamps all the IP packets as it's own and
sends them out through the PPP link on the modem. For incoming
responses, it re-stamps them for the correct PC within your
local network, and sends them out on the ethernet card. The
other local machines then have Internet access.

I am currently running Slackware 3.1 but this should also apply to Red
Hat 4.1 I would think.
What you need to do is read the IP-Masqerade mini-howto. It is
available from many places.
Basically what you do in a nut shell it:
1.) Recompile your kernel with support for:
CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL
CONFIG_MODULES
CONFIG_NET
CONFIG_FIREWALL
CONFIG_INET
CONFIG_IP_FORWARD
CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL
CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE
CONFIG_IP_ALWAYS_DEFRAG
CONFIG_DUMMY
2.) Make sure you run make modules and make modules_install
3.) Whenever you want to enable the gatewaying support type the
following (or write a script
like me):
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_raudio.o
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc.o
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m -S yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -W eth0
where yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy is the mask for the ip's you
assigned to the internal machines,
like 192.168.1.0 for example.
BTW the computers accessing the gateway can be any OS as long as you
can set there
gateway address to your linux machine.

I am considering ugrading from vesa 486dx-33mhx to vesa 5c86 from AMD to preserve

not been able to get a good feeling that it will.....
