ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV & Linux

Post by Victor M. Becerr » Sat, 24 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I have problems configuring X-windows on a PC which has
the ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV video card. I use the Linux
distribution Debian 1.3.1. I have tried the mash64 driver
with several options for the card and all have failed.

I would appreciate if anyone who has succesfully setup X-windows
with this video card could send me some help.

Many thanks

Hi,    This look correct. The ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV uses a Mach64 chip.
I am also having trouble configuring this card. If you have been
successful, please send me your /etc/XF86Config file.
    Thanks.

I wanted to help but when I looked at my own configuration I got
confused.

in /usr/X11R6/bin/ I have
bash-2.00$ pwd
/usr/X11R6/bin
bash-2.00$ ls -la X*
-rwsr-xr-x   1 root     root         4344 Jul 17  1997 X
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root      1295688 Jan 18  1997 XF86_EGA
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root      1891828 Jul 17  1997 XF86_Mach64
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root        27499 Jul 17  1997 Xmark
-rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root      2175524 Jun 20  1997 Xnest
bash-2.00$

in /etc/X11/xdm/xservers I have
# X servers are automatically added to this file by the Debian
# xbase and xserver configuration scripts.
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 32

so does that mean I'm not using the correct driver?

  Hi Victor!

You can get a special X-Server for ATI cards at www.suse.de (or
www.suse.com). It ist placed in the section XSuSE-XServer and named
X_SuSE_Mach64. Youll have to download the X-server and a specially

and it should work with your ATI card, too.

1. ATI 3D PRO TURBO PC2TV & 3D XPRESSION+ PC2TV

Hi.

I'd like to hear of what kind of expieriences people have had with
these cards using XF86 or other X servers.

I'm planning to run RH Linux 4.0, and I'd like to run truecolor or
hicolor at 1280x1024. Does anyone have any comment on screen refresh
rates? Anything less than 76Hz is unusable IMO. According to ATI, the
3D XPRESSION+ PC2TV can do 90Hz, and I assume the PRO TURBO card can
do the same.

The questions are:

1) Can XF86 (or others) do 76Hz or better in 1280x1024 true/hicolor?
2) Can XF86 (or others) take advantage of 4/8MB of ram for larger
virtual desktops, pixmap/font buffers, or whatever?

Thanks in advance.
