modem trouble: USR 56K V.90 voice fax modem

Post by Swamy Ananthanaraya » Fri, 11 Sep 1998 04:00:00

Greetings,

Recently I purchased a U.S. Robotics 56 K voice/faxmodem and after a
week of labor it still doesn't work under linux. So far I have read the
serial-howto and the ppp-howto and neither have helped me in my pursuit.
Since linux doesn't like plug and play ...I manually jumpered the card
for IRQ 3 and COM 2. I then linked /dev/ttyS1 to /dev/modem but it
doesn't seem to help --linux still doesn't recognize my modem. So far I
have tried dialing out with seyon (I have yet to try minicom). Thank you
for your time and please reply at your convenience.

Regards,
Swamy

P.S. If possible please reply to both the group and me. Thanks again.

I, too, have a USR 56K Sportster Voice/Fax Internal PnP modem.  I am trying
to get mine going with RedHat 5.1.  I, too, have read the ppp-howto to  no
avail.

First, this is NOT a winmodem.  However, it is listed in the RedHat list
of incompatible modems.  An excerpt from that list:
========== excerpt ==============
Modems that require software drivers for compression, error correction,
high-speed
     operation, etc.
PCI Memory Mapped Modems (these do not act like serial ports)
               Internal SupraExpress 56k
               Internal SupraSonic 56k
               Newer Internal Laptop Modems
          The Multiwave Innovation CommWave V.34
          US Robotics WinModem series
US Robotics Sportster Voice/Fax modem (X2 model 1785 internal
PNP)
                      :
                      :
======== end excerpt =======================
So, it seems to be in this list because of the software for compression,
etc.  Well, I just can't believe I won't be able to get the thing to work
at all, but I have yet to figure it out.  I think the only difference
between it and the Sportster Fax Modem is some software for Voice support,
but I may be wrong.

I also reconfigured the jumpers so the modem is not plug-n-pray,
but rather hardcoded to IRQ5, COM3.  This setting works with Win95 and
WinNT. Linux has not been able to recognize the modem at all.  I have
tried minicom to talk to it, with no response to the modem commands.

My only other thought is that there is some conflict with my sound card (a
SoundBlaster AWE64), since it also does not work under linux.  In the two
Windows environments, it is running under IRQ10.  I don't understand why the
soundblaster doesn't work, as it seems to be supported by RedHat 5.1.  Using
isapnptool has not worked.

Has anyone had success with this modem specifically?  Swamy and I
would love to hear about it.

Thanks,
David

I've got that (external) modem and didn't have a bit of trouble with
Red Hat 5.1, running on a Toshiba laptop (335CDT).

Sorry can't help otherwise. Just an observation.

modem trouble: USR 56K V.90 voice fax modem

isapnptools is pretty tricky!  You feel in using it that it
automatically configures Linux for the modem.  But this is not true.
After running pnpdump > isapnp.conf, you are confronted with a
commented-out script.

You must manually remove the #'s from the lines you want to run. All
the keyword executable commands are uppercase, and you must follow the
logic? of the thing carefully. Because iIf isapnp sees a comment
uncommented, it stops running right there.

See the author's help page with a detailed example:
www.roestock.demon.co.uk/isapnptools/README.modules

I have not used correct setserial commands myself yet, but to the
author of isapnptools, they are straightforward! (They can only be
used after pnpdump and isapnp have been successfully configured, quite
a chore.)

The right thing to do. My modem has no pins where those jumpers should
be.

See the setserial examples at README listed above.

I have run two of these modems in two linux boxes with no problems.  One
is jumpered to 2F8 IRQ3 and the other is PnP'd to 3E8 IRQ5.  However,
the kernel on the box with the PnP'd modem sees a "phantom" serial port
at 2E8 that isn't there.  I haven't tried to use it, and both serial
ports and the modem work fine, so I don't plan on spending a whole lot
of time finding out why.

So, I don't think your modem is the problem.  I didn't see your original
post, so I can't speculate as to what is.

1. USR ISA 56k v.90 Data/Fax/Voice on RH Linux 6.2

I just installed Red Hat Linux 6.2 and I am
trying to get my modem to work. I have a USR 56k
Data/Fax/Voice ISA modem. (It is not a Winmodem)

I have setup an ISP and Used the modemtool to
install my modem. It says that it is trying to
connect but I never hear my modem dial and I
never get a connection. Are there some drivers
that I am missing? I am very new to Linux, so any
help would be appreciated.
