Altus Pentium, too cheap?

Altus Pentium, too cheap?

Post by Jeffrey Ni » Wed, 18 Jan 1995 07:27:20

The time has finally come.  I have a wad of money burning a hole in my
pocket and I'm going to buy this week, but I have to get feedback on this
deal first.  Altus (of Walnut CA) advertizes a P90system with 8mb, 730mb,
15" monitor with a 1mb Trident PCI video card.  The price is an unheard
of $1748 +$65 s&h, with 3 year warranty.  Now, this is just too
tempting.  Some corners had to be cut.  An additional $200 will replace
the TRIDENT with a Stealth 64, so that is one corner.  What I really
worry about is the motherboard.  It is by SIS, which I have never heard
of, and when I pressed Regine, my friendly but non-native english
speaking sales representative about the chip set and bios all she could
come up with for me was "Award", which I have also not heard of.  I'm not
even sure if that is a chipset or bios.
I am really fired up to spend some money, but I am not keen to
waste any.  This system will run Linux (of course) and OS-2 (and ok,
ms-dos&win3.11 and if it ever actually arrives, Chicago).

Regards,

Jeff

Well, if it helps any it's Award Bios. I have it on my machine. Seems
to be fine. I recently bought a system in the Bay area and that price
isn't too far off...especially if it's got IDE controller & hard
drive. (SCSI costs a noticeable bit more)

Something to ask about is if it's a desktop or tower model (and if
tower, is it mini, mid, or full) for upgrade purposes. The brand of
monitor and dpi rating would also be of interest...

Good luck!

At least check how many expansion sockets there are - for extra cards -
AND memory. Is it a 'green' board etc.
