Alsa and ESS688? Does it really work?

I'm trying to get to run Alsa (got the latest development version from
http://www.alsa-project.org) on a system with onboard ES688.

Here's what I get:

modprobe snd-es1688

/lib/modules/2.2.22/misc/snd-es1688.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.2.22/misc/snd-es1688.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.22/misc/snd-es1688.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.22/misc/snd-es1688.o: insmod snd-es1688 failed

According to
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=ESS+T
echnology&card=ES688&chip=ES688&module=es1688 the ES688 should be
supported.

What am I doing wrong? What could I do to solve that issue?

Using OSS works find on that system.

(after doing modprobe sb:)
