Help in installing on Compaq Prosignia w/ NCR 53c710 SCSI

Post by ggie.. » Thu, 30 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I am having difficutly getting RedHat 5.1 installed on a Compaq
Prosignia with a NCR 53C710 SCSI. The installation software will not
find the device. I am wondering if there is a parameter I can pass using
expert install mode?

Thanks,

From the 5.1 compatibility page:

6.3 Tier 2 Supported SCSI Adapters

The following SCSI adapters are partially supported:

      NCR 53c875-based adapters
      NCR 53C400; NCR 53C810, 53C810A, 53C815, 53C820, 53C825
      Trantor T128, T128F, T228

I don't think yours is in there. Might try doing a basic install on some
vanilla IDE hardware and recompile the 2.0.35 (latest stable) kernel
with support for your card:

NCR 53C400 (Trantor T130B) (use generic NCR 5380 SCSI support)
NCR 53C406a (Acculogic ISApport / Media Vision Premium 3D SCSI)
      NCR chips 53C7x0
      NCR chips 53C810, 53C815, 53C820, 53C825, 53C860, 53C875, 53C895
The Kernel support and a quick look through my source tree says it's
there. Probably just not audetectable from Redhat's module install.
Anyway, with the new kernel, you can transfer stuff to your SCSI drives
and be off and running.

1. Compaq ProSignia with NCR 53c710 SCSI

I have a Compaq ProSignia VS with an onboard NCR 53c710, which LILO is
failing to pick up. How do I get Linux to see it? (According to the
BIOS, its IO port is 0x8000, IRQ is 11, but I cannot find out the DMA
channel if there is one)

I've been looking through HOWTOs for about a day now and I can't
figure it out. From the boot prompt, I tried 'ramdisk
NCR53c710=0x8000,11' but that made no difference.

Also, I borrowed an Adaptec 1522 but this card cannot send a Start
Unit command, which the Compaq internal HD requires to spin up. Next I
tried a 1542 - this time the disk spins up, but now I get 'disk not
ready' errors when reading files. I could reformat my HD, but hey,
what good is a 'standard' where a HD formatted using one SCSI card
cannot be used with another? Is this behaviour normal, or are things
really screwed up here?

Please CC so I can sort out this mess asap.

Thanks,
