Panasonic CR-563, CR-562 and IBM external CR-563 compatible.

Hi,

I have a couple of questions concerning CD-ROM drives.

a) What is the difference between a Panasonic CR-562 and a  Panasonic CR-563 ?

b) Can I use the IBM external (Panasonic CR-563 compatible) as an internal
CDROM drive, and can I then connect it to the Panasonic Soundblaster
   Interface with a 40-pin cable.
And can I connect the IBM drive via an internal cable to the audio card
for the audio facilities. (4-pin cable)?
Does the SBPCD driver work with this IBM 'internal drive', connected to
the sound blaster, or does it only work with his own interface and so as
   an external drive?
Are the connectors of this drive so that it can be used as internal drive,
I mean the power, data and audio connectors?

c) Is there someone who has a working INSTANT TECH CDROM drive under linux
(double speed)? It is named INSTANT TECH CDAT300I, and has its own interface
board, and could work with a SONY compatible interface. It has a 34-pins
connector. The interface card is named something like 'IAT-SY02'.
Is there someone who has a driver for this CDROM player, for under Linux?
Or is there someone who can give me some hints?
The device driver for under dos is named CDAT300I.SYS. The firm is GSL.
Could I use the sony interface on the sound blaster card?
   Any help is appreciated

Panasonic CR-563, CR-562 and IBM external CR-563 compatible.

: a) What is the difference between a Panasonic CR-562 and a  Panasonic CR-563 ?

The CR-563 is known to have it's digital audio output (2-pin "JEDEC") on
the bach of the drive "connected" (i.e. it follows a standard, and it gives
signals). The CR-562 is only known to having those 2 pins, too (not
mentioned within the booklet).

: b) Can I use the IBM external (Panasonic CR-563 compatible) as an internal
:    CDROM drive, and can I then connect it to the Panasonic Soundblaster
:    Interface with a 40-pin cable.

Yes - it is a CR-56x if you take it out of it's case.

:    And can I connect the IBM drive via an internal cable to the audio card
:    for the audio facilities. (4-pin cable)?

Yes.

:    Does the SBPCD driver work with this IBM 'internal drive', connected to
:    the sound blaster, or does it only work with his own interface and so as
:    an external drive?

Works all those ways with sbpcd.

:    Are the connectors of this drive so that it can be used as internal drive,
:    I mean the power, data and audio connectors?

Yes. Inside the case is a "normal" drive.

Read /usr/src/linux/drivers/block/README.sbpcd about that.

: c) Is there someone who has a working INSTANT TECH CDROM drive under linux
:    (double speed)? It is named INSTANT TECH CDAT300I, and has its own interface
:    board, and could work with a SONY compatible interface. It has a 34-pins
:    connector. The interface card is named something like 'IAT-SY02'.

You could try the Sony drivers cdu31a.c and (soon part of the kernel)
sonycd535.c.
But typically, those "third party" drives are compatible only regarding the
interface layout, not regarding the commands and the flow control scheme.

:    Is there someone who has a driver for this CDROM player, for under Linux?
:    Or is there someone who can give me some hints?
:    The device driver for under dos is named CDAT300I.SYS. The firm is GSL.

:    Could I use the sony interface on the sound blaster card?

Try it under DOS. Using the interface should work, at least.

Cheers -e-

1. Does a Panasonic CR-563-B CD-ROM drive act like a CR-562?

I can't get the Fall '93 Yggdrasil Linux CD-ROM to boot up
on my PC.  I have a 586 box with a Panasonic CR-563-B drive
connected to a sound-less interface card ("Golden" brand).
The drive works find under DOS, but Linux does not seem to be
aware of its existance.  I have the interrupt disconnected
(the jumper on the card completely removed), but as far as I
know, the Linux driver doesn't use the interrupt.  The base address
is 310H.

Should this setup work?  Is the 563 drive really different than the 562?
Can I get a updated boot disk or something what will work with this drive?

Thanks,

Doug Braun
