RAM not recognized on Compaq Prosignia 500

Post by David Norinsk » Thu, 11 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a Compaq Prosignia 500.  It has 16 MB on the motherboard - which
Redhat 6.0 sees.  The Problem is that if I install any more RAM,  the OS
doesn't recognize it.  EISA configuration see's addtional RAM,  I see
the additional RAM at POST,  and Netware (previously) saw the additional
RAM.
I just upgraded to the latest BIOS from Compaq - but this didn't help.
I have tried inserting the following line in the lilo.conf file:

append="mem=144M"

But this did not help.
I then took the amount of RAM in the machine down to 48 MB,  removed the
above line from the lilo.conf file,  but Linux still only see's 16 MB of
RAM.
If anyone has any ideas,  please let me know - here and/or at my email

Thanks for any ideas,

RAM not recognized on Compaq Prosignia 500

David,

Try this:  at the boot: prompt type

linux mem=144

if that works, you are not editing the lilo file correctly.  Also after you
make the change in lilo.conf did you run lilo again to accept the new
setting?

The irony of this is that the reason the Compaq machines do this is that
they conform to the bios specification as developed by IBM whereas other
bios manufacturers do not.

1. Compaq Prosignia 500 Memory not recognized

I installed Red Hat 6.0 on a Compaq Prosignia 500 and it will only
recognize 16meg of the 160meg of memory.  I do not know what a memory
hole at 15 to 16meg is or how to disable it in the bios.  the Bios
reads the memory right the cpu is on the same riser card as the
memory.  There is memory both on the board and in the simm slots.  It
is the memory in the simm slots that is not seen by Linux but the Bios
sees it fine.  Also, I know this is a bad word but Windows NT 4.0
Terminal server was just on this box and it saw all the memory.

If any one has any IDEA on how to fix this please let me know
