RH9 with HP 8200e CD burner, writes but has problems reading?

This is an odd one, the googleing I did shows that most people have probs
with external usb burners not working at all or reading but not being able
to burn.  Mine burns fine but sometimes when I put in a data cd, burned or
bought, an audio CD player pops up and my system locks.  I can't eject the
cd or kill the player, I have to power off both my laptop and the drive.
I'm stuck as to how to start troubleshooting this one.

On a side note, I've been running RH for less than a week and managed to
help a co-worker who needed a w2k reskit file.  I was able to find and
install a .cab file extractor, pull the file from the cab on the w2kreskit
cd and e-mail it to him.  I found it a bit humorous to support a w2k box
with a linux box.

You'd start troubleshooting it by looking in /var/log/messages for
anything funny that got recorded right before the lockup happened.
If you have any sort of automount daemon/service running, turn it off.
Automount daemons usually don't work right and are of limited use
anyway.

Happens all the time... at my previous job, my Linux laptop was the only
computer in the building that could reliably read HFS (MacOS) floppies
since mandates from On High disposed of all the Macs.

Thats what I'm thinking, maybe disable the autoplay for cd audio and see
what happens.  I'll have to look up where that is in RH.  I did notice a
little bit ago when it did it I get a flashing caps and scroll lock.  Kind
of reminds me of the Amiga days with the guru error, didn't it flash the
lights that way.

 Yep :)  I'm a transplant... Had that A2k with that 50mhz Derringer 10
years.. On my 6 month with the "Twins"  Amd 2400's

I couldn't resist a reply.. I have nothing to add to the thread
pardon me...

1. HP CD-Writer 8200e (USB)

Hi,

I have seen in linux-2.4.0-test8 that there is support for the
USB cd writer HP 8200e (see the file linux/drivers/usb/storage/shuttle_usbat.c).

Has anybody tried it?

Thanks in advance

Ale
