XFree, SpeedstarPro, and Samsung Syncmaster 3

I just tried to install Linux and can't seem to get X configured.
I have a SpeedstarPro video card, and a Samsung SyncMaster 3
SVGA monitor.  I tried using the generic monitor (since mine
wasn't in the list). When I go try to "tune" the settings the
console spits out two expr errors and somekind of "not a number"
error (I'm not near the system now, or I'd quote it correctly).
Anyway, it looks as though the server's -probeonly thing simply
eliminates all the clock / resolution combinations, and gives
me nothing to "tune". I've read through the FAQ, but I don't
really have a clue where to go from here... (I'm used to doing
stuff on Sun's - seems easier). Anyone who can help - I'd
really appreciate it, else I'll just drop linux and go back to
using that disk for Windoze.
