I bought an 8.45GB EIDE UDMA hard disk (IBM DHEA-38451) and connected it to
the primary slave channel, thus:
hda: 3.2GB Western Digital Caviar
hdb: 8.45GB IBM
hdc: IDE CD-ROM drive
hdd: ATAPI ZIP drive
I created a 2GB DOS (FAT16) partition (yes I know the cluster size is huge)
and 7 logical partitions, all ext2. All worked OK for a while, ran e2fsck when
demanded on hdb5, 6 and 8. Then suddenly hdb6 wouldn't mount 'cos magic
number was wrong. Run mke2fs, lose all data.
Yesterday, lost hdb6 - hdb12 (i.e. hdb5 still there but it's the only logical
partition that the OS and Linux FDisk can see)!!
Questions:
1. Do ext2 partitions disappear if not used for (e.g.) four weeks? I know
it's a very silly question but I need to know before I speak to the supplier)
2. Is there something wrong with the partition sector on the disk (i.e.
physically wrong)?
Thanks,
