HP SuperStore DAT24x6e w/ Autoloader HP C1557A tape drive

Post by Dmitri » Tue, 29 Aug 2000 04:00:00

Greetings,

Did anybody have experience with this beast? I tried a number of
different software packages. Most of them either failed to even
recognize autoloader or refused to work with it. In most cases backup
just crashes when the tape is full without ever switching to the next.

In particular, I tried Arkeia, Novanet 8 and TapeWear (last two seem to
be the same product) as well as countless smaller apps. Any pointers
would be appreciated.

is (I believe) the non autoloader varient of yours.  I seem to remember
seeing mention of support for the autoloader version.  You can down load
and try for 30 days, after that its ~$85US for personal.

1. HP SureStore DAT24x6e (C1559A) Autoloader and Linux?

Has anyone gotten the autoloader to work with the abovementioned DAT
drive?  I can get the box recognised, and I can read/write/etc to a
single tape, but I can't figure out how to get the autoloader to work,
mounting and unmounting tapes.

The manual says it's model number HP C1559A, though scanning the scsi
bus tells me that it is model C1557A.  It's a 4mm DAT, DDS-3, 24GB/tape
6 tape autoloader.

mt -f /dev/st0 status gives me:

SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=0, block number=0, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x25 (unknown).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (41010000):
 BOT ONLINE IM_REP_EN

dmesg gives me:

...other scsi disk info...
scsi0: Received MSG_WDTR, Target 5, channel A needwdtr(0xfff8).
scsi0: Target 5, channel A, now synchronous at 10.0MHz, offset 15.
Vendor: HP        Model: C1557A            Rev: U610
Type:   Sequential-Access                  ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun 0
scsi: unknown type 8
Vendor: HP        Model: C1557A            Rev: U610
Type:   Medium Changer                     ANSI SCSI revision: 02
scsi : detected 1 SCSI tape 2 SCSI disks total.
...other init info...

Any help would be appreciated!
