Howto fix bad blocks on ReiserFS

Post by John Zoetebie » Sun, 23 Nov 2003 18:54:06

My configuration:
SuSE Linux 8.1
ReiserFS 3.6.4-12

I have some bad blocks on HDD.
The partition has ReiserFS.
This version of ReiserFS does not have a builtin function to handle bad
blocks.
Is there a workaround available ?

The SMART logic on the disk takes care of bad blocks, the file system
doesn't need to know about them. If you want to make sure that all of the
bad blocks have been mapped out you should dismount the disk and run
badblocks in the non-destructive rw mode, that will read and write every
block on the disk. If there is a problem with a block the disk will map it
out. Badblocks in non-destructive mode is very very slow, expect it to
take 2 days on a larg disk. Badblocks in destructive write/read mode is
faster but that will require you to reformat the disk after it's done.

1. Finding out if there are bad blocks in the bad blocks list

Hi

I'm trying to find out whether there are any bad blocks in the ext2fs
bad block list. I think there might be, because I had a whole lot of
ext2fs error messages popping up during a compile, and when I removed
the directory I was working with and ran e2fsck -cf /dev/hdc6, it told
me the filesystem was modified, even though none of the regular checks
had failed (I'd previously run e2fsck -f /dev/hdc6, so all the duplicate
blocks and unattached inodes and stuff had been sorted out). I think the
drive might still be under warranty, so if there are bad blocks I'll
take it back.

TIA
Bruce
