old vga + xf86config

Hi !
need help for finding right clockfrequencies for an OLD VGA
640x480 and LINUX. It is not defective. It is working right
with other OSs (WIN+ OS/2).
But on linux I only can adjust 640x400 or larger modes.
is there a better program for LINUX like MATROX provides for
their graphic cards available for LINUX to finetune ?
XVtune doesnot do its job.

Look on the monitor (probably on the back) for the FCC ID.  If you
find anything about horizontal and vertical frequencies, great, but if
not, get the FCC ID, brand, and model number.

Then get on the web and go to http://www.sbsdirect.com/fccenter.html
Key in the FCC ID and find out who made the thing.

Try to find them and ask them for the horizontal and vertical
frequencies.  And configure X appropriately.

oops, when I wrote this, I didn't notice that the question originated
in Germany.  Sorry.

The advice I gave works in the US.  May or may not be of any use
elsewhere.  Or there may be equivalent setups in other countries.

1. X Windows and my old old old old video card

Hi. The card in question is an ISA ATI Graphics Ultra Pro (with the mach32
engine). The particular monitor that I'm using is an AST Vision 4L, and I
managed to root through the AST website (talk about counterintuitive!) so
I could get the horiz and vert scan lines etc. I can't seem to get X setup
right, when I run probe, it complains about a missing clocks line. Is
there any doc which can EXPLAIN xf86config? A man page helps, but getting
the theory fundas would be even nicer.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the level of support the linux community
provides. Also, being something of a DOS/Windows junkie ;=( in the past,
i'd appreciate it if I could be told where to get my hands on info that'll
help me migrate better.
