Xircom CEM56 - How to use modem and ethernet simultaneously?

Post by Jon Martin Solaa » Sun, 07 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Running RH 5.1 on a Toshiba Sattelite 230CX I can use the Xircom CEM56
modem/eth10/100 card. With the initial setup I can load network fine,
but the serial stuff (modem) won't work. But if I disable the modem
part in /etc/pcmcia/config, like this:

card "Xircom CEM56 Ethernet/Modem Card"
  version "Xircom", "*", "CEM56"
#  bind "xirc2ps_cs", "serial_cs"
  bind "serial_cs"

modem works just fine, but ofcourse ethernet doesn't ...

Is it possible to have both functionalities of the card running
simultaneously?

This is what it looks like when loading of the serial modules fails:

Jun  6 18:04:41 bar kernel: loading device 'eth0'...
Jun  6 18:04:41 bar kernel: eth0: auto negotation failed; using 10mbs
Jun  6 18:04:41 bar kernel: eth0: media 10BaseT, silicon revision 5
Jun  6 18:04:41 bar kernel: eth0: Xircom: port 0x300, irq 3, hwaddr 00:80:C7:69:0C:DE
Jun  6 18:04:41 bar kernel: register_serial(): autoconfig failed
Jun  6 18:04:41 bar kernel: serial_cs: register_serial() at 0x02e8, irq 3 failed

I have tried different IRQ's, but it doesn't help.

Quote:> modem works just fine, but ofcourse ethernet doesn't ...

And, I forgot to mention, ppp access using the card is real slow
compared to using it with Win95.

1. Xircom CEM56-100 pcmcia modem/ethernet card

I am running a standard RedHat 7.1 distro on a Sony Vaio (PCG-F360
model), and I am trying to get a Xircom CEM56-100 dual purpose
lan/modem pcmcia card to work.

After mucking about with KPPP, I opened the terminal (KPPP's internal
one ) to /dev/ttyS3/ to watch what was going on. Unless I kept my
finger pressed on the <ENTER> key, the data would not be written to
the terminal. Once I kept my finger pressed on ENTER, the data being
written to the terminal made sense.

Has anyone out there gotten one of these modems to work? Again, I
reiterate that I have all of the required kernel modules and serial
drivers. I can communicate with the modem, but the modem doesn't make
any sense! :)
