Can anyone recommend which 1U from Dell, HP, or IBM will work with
Fedora Core 2 ( preferrably one with 2 x NICs ... not 1 NIC with 2 ports
) ?  I am not overly concerned about OS support from the hardware vendor
... just hardware support from the them.

Dell's PowerEdge boxes have worked great for us -- they'll ship you RHEL
preloaded if you want it. We've had good luck with the PowerEdge 1650,
and I hear the 700 series is a good bargain if you doin't mind IDE
drives etc.

Probably any of them would work.  AFAIK, they all offer 1U machines with
Linux pre-installed.  If you buy one of those models without an OS, you
should pretty much be able to install any Linux distro you choose so
long as its kernel provides the right drivers.  IOW, as long as your
distro of choice has a kernel at least as new as the one they ship you
should be fine.

FWIW, when I bought some 1U servers from Dell they were offering RHAS as
the only supported Linux version.  I opted to buy it without any OS and
installed Debian without any surprises.

I've got various flavours of RH9, RLEL, and Debian "sarge" installed on
1750s, 1650, and even a 700. They all (seem to) work fine for me.
