Very Computer

Linux does not recognize my 3com 3c509 ethernet card, need help.
I have read the Ethernet HOWTO and the Net-2/Net3 HOWTO and
have recompiled the kernel with support for all 3com cards.

The problem is,
# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1
returns,
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

I am running,
cpu               : Intel 486dx-33 (ISA bus)
linux version     : 1.2.8
linux distribution: Slackware 2.3  (July 1995)

I have also tried a 3com 3c507 with the same results.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
