hmm, no real idea.  I'd guess your new main board is the problem
(in combination witht he card; PCI timing problems, ...). but maybe

where is this COM4 port located ??
did you have it on your 486 board too (using the *same* card) ?
some COM4 ports have address conflicts with the S3 chips due to
broken address decoders. try to disable/remove this port.

also get XFree86 3.1.2B which has some minor PCI fixes...

and try your graphics card in every single PCI slot...

Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM Problem (Blank Screen)

Post by Joel D. Youn » Sun, 18 Feb 1996 04:00:00

Harald etal

I just tried an old Trident 8900d or some such with the
SVGA server and got exactly the same simptoms as I had been
getting with the Diamond.  It is not a diamond problem.

Seems to be somesort of motherboard problem.

The Trident is and ISA card not even PCI.

These are the symptoms:

1. I start X
2. Screen flashes and goes blank (number on monitor changes to
  correct value)
3. If I try repeatedly to switch to another VC, the harddrive spins like
crazy and then X flashes up and then If I press again I can switch to a
text console.  Right after getting to the text console, the drive spins
again and then X continues loading and my startup music plays.  Now
if I switch to the X VC then My full display is there windows and all
but now the system is locked.
4. The machine is still running (a mod file continues playing in the
back ground) so when I am experimenting, I set shutdown to go off in a
few minutes so the system will get a clean boot.

Any suggestions?  Someone suggested that PNP was the problem but if so
what can I do?

I also moved my Modem to Com2 and my mouse to com1 so nothing would be
on com3 and com4.  This problem happens even if the video card is the
Only card in the system.

1. Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM or ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (Mach 64)?

I'm looking into getting a Micron P120PCI Millennia Plus system for
running Linux and XFree86. The Micron upgrade choices for video cards
are:

 - Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM    - 2MB or 4MB
 - ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (Mach 64) - 2MB or 4MB

Which is better supported in XFree86?

Is there any significant speed difference between these two cards for
XFree86?

I've heard that some cards run faster w/4MB than 2MB due to memory
interleaving or double wide bus access.  Do either of these two cards
have this property or is the only difference for these cards the
number of colors supported at higher resolutions?

Thanks,
Doug
