NEC PostScript printer problem

Post by Ken Kobayas » Sun, 14 Apr 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm having trouble getting my NEC SilentWriter2 Model90 printer to
work under Linux.  Parallel printer support is enabled in kernel.  The
printcap file I left as default, which looks OK for a standard printer
(no filters, etc.)  However when I try to print a file, the printer says
'processing', then 'waiting', then nothing.  This happens whther I use
the lpr command or cat directly into the device.  I booted the system
with a DOS diskette and printed the exact same PostScript file, and it
prints fine.  What could be the problem?

Ken,

I have a Silentwriter 1097 that had the same problem. Used the (I think) AS2PS
filter and everything worked.

Hi!

I don't know this NEC printer excatly. My friend is using a
NEC Silentwriter SuperScript 610 Plus laser-printer that is
specially adapted to Windows because it uses the Graphic
Device Interface (GDI) under DOS/Windows. On the same OS it works
also in PCL modus and is compatible to HP Laserjet II P. But
it don't work under LINUX.

Following your description above I'm afraid of the fact that you
have also such a special (Windows-)printer that won't work under
LINUX.

ciao,

Yes, so I heard...  However the SilentWriter2-90 is a real PostScript
printer and should work in any OS - and it did work just fine in
DOS, OS/2 and Windows.  It also has Lasetjert IIp emulaion, but I
had no luck with that under Linux.

Any ideas?

1. Problems printing on NEC Postscript Printer

I'm running the Red Hat 4.1 Linux distribution. I have 2 printers
attached to my system; a Canon ink jet and an NEC PS 190 Postscript
printer. I have 2 parallel ports, one for each. I set up the Canon
as my main printer (I can print using lpr) but when I try to print
to the NEC, the printer indicates that it is receiving data but almost
immediately goes to a "Ready" state and nothing ever get's printed
out. I've tried some print tests (using the Print Setup GUI) and have
seen pages get printed (blank pages and one with some garbled text
only on the first line) so I assume the port is correct... I am
trying to use the 'a2ps' (ascii to postscript) program to print to it.

Can anyone help or point me to some better info than the HOW-TOs?

Thanks!
