PPro vs. Pentium

PPro vs. Pentium

Post by Greg Sieka » Wed, 27 Nov 1996 04:00:00

This question has been brothering me for a few days now.  I looking into
getting a new system to run win95 and linux.  I mainly run linux to run
simulations that require alot of computational effort by the cpu.

Would I be better off getting a PPro 200 or Pentium 200?  The price
difference is only ~$300.

Which will give me the best bang for the buck?  The Pentium 200 I'm
looking at has the VX chip set with SDRAM, how much additional performance
does this give over EDO ram?  I currently own a Pentium 100, how much
performance gain should I see if I upgrade?

thanks,
Greg

I check Gateway 2000 last week (www.gw2k.com), and the price
difference was exactly $85 for systems configured exactly the same.
(Don't ask me why the chip prices have such a greater difference!)

I timed a kernel compile on a P5-200 (VX chipset) and a P6-200.
Both had 32MB EDO memory, and I used the exact same kernel drivers
and actually moved the hard drive between the two machines.

The times were (min:sec):   P5-200 8:36    P6-200 5:41

It's worth the $85 to me!  I have a P6-200 on order now.

With a molecular dynamics simulation mdbench
(http://www.sissa.it/furio/mdbnch.html) I'll get 358 Pentium-MHz with
pentium-optimized gcc-compiler for my 200 MHz Pentium Pro with Intel
Venus MB.  The comparison was done with 133 MHz Pentium, but I assume
that the speed of Pentium machines scale quite well with MHz.

It seems that the speed difference between Pentiums and Pentium Pros
depend very much on the code which is used. Sometimes I get only
~200 Pentium-MHz and sometimes nearly 400. This far I haven't found any
general rule which codes are fast and which codes are not. Usually
MD-codes seems to benefit more PPro than Monte Carlo codes, but it
really depends on the specific code.

Personally I would certainly buy PPro. For 32-operating systems I can't see
any reason to buy usual Pentium any more.

1. PPro vs. Pentium II

Does anyone have statistics on the relative performance
of the Pentium Pro (200MHz) and the Pentium II (266 or
300 Mhz), running under Solaris for x86?

Also, how much improvement can one expect on the Pentium
Pro by using a chip with a 512 K cache instead of 256 K?
