XF86Conf monitor refresh rates

Post by Hash » Thu, 03 Dec 1998 04:00:00

hi,
i have a rather ancient 14" SVGA monitor on my computer (sentimental value,
still in _very_ good condition and i can't afford a new one) which isn't
documented in the X monitor database.  at the moment i have X running in a
wimpy 640*480, but i know it runs quite happily at 1024*768 (what it runs in
Win95 on the same machine).  i have been having difficulty putting correct
(i.e. the monitor tends to have disturbing fits with my settings) entries into
XF86Conf.  now very much frustrated with the HOWTO (RH 5.2 comes with lots of
them) on this topic was wondering whether there are any programs around that
can generate correct entries or alternatively if there is a very intelligent
fellow who actually understands this stuff?

thanks,
        Hashi.

Does it work well enough to use xvidtune to generate entries that work?
I have an unknown monitor and use horizontal 30-65 that seems to work in
the mode that you want via using xvidtune.

Hope it goes will anyway ...

Hi,
I had a simmilar problem.  If you are running windows95
go into your display settings under the monitor tab and
note what monitor type is selected.
Then, in the \windows\inf directory look for the files
- monitor.inf, monitor2.inf, monitor3.inf, etc.  Open each
of these and look for your monitor and it will list the valid
modes.  This worked for me.

Hope this helps.

1. Setting Monitor Refresh Rate

I have "de-uglified" the fonts on RH 6.1 (as per the HOW-TO).  The ttf's,
etc., are an improvement.  In Para 2.in the HOW-TO there is mention of
setting the monitor refresh rate as high as possible (say, 85 vs. 60 Hz).  I
cannot see a method for doing this using Xconfigurator, and just changing
the
values in XF86Config crashed the X server.  Is there a recommended
method of changing this rate?

Monitor is a Dell UltraScan D1025HTX (which seems capable of
the 85 Hz rate).

Good luck and good sailing.
